Automobile Claims General
Information
•
You should expect to hear from an insurance company claims adjuster
within 24-48 hours. Be certain to make note of your claim number
and the
adjuster’s
extension for future reference.
• If your vehicle is drivable and you are insured with Commerce
Insurance Company,
you may bring it to their drive-in appraisal service:
County Auto Appraisal, 100 Fenn Street, Pittsfield
Wednesdays from 1:00-4:30 & Fridays 9:00-1:00
No appointment is needed
• If your vehicle is not drivable, the insurance company adjuster
will contact you to arrange an
appraisal. If you have not already done so, please let us or the insurance
company know if
your vehicle is at a body shop or towing garage. You could incur storage fees
above
what is reasonable and customary and if the insurance company is aware of the
vehicle location
they can assist you in moving it or expediting your claim to avoid fees.
• If you have rental reimbursement and/or you require substitute
transportation, please inquire with our office or the adjuster for
advice prior to renting a vehicle. In every case, there is a limit
based upon either your policy limits or the reasonable and customary
fee if you are seeking rental from the other party's insurance company.
To avoid any unexpected expenses, please ask about limits.
• If you or anyone in your vehicle was injured, please let
our office or the insurance company adjuster know immediately. While
your health insurance can cover some expenses, the auto insurance
company will coordinate payment of expenses covered by your Personal
Injury Protection with your health insurer. Advising the insurance
company as soon as possible after an accident can expedite the necessary
paperwork.
• The Commonwealth requires that you complete a Motor Vehicle
Crash Operator Report for any accident involving injury and/or physical
damages exceeding
$1,000. If you have not already received the report form, we would
be happy to provide one for your use. You may complete one original
form and mail it to our office. We will copy it and forward copies
as required to the RMV, Police Department and insurance company.
• In order for your Deductible Waiver to apply, the other
vehicle involved must be 100% at fault and you must provide your
insurer with sufficient information to identify that vehicle. In
some cases, your deductible may be taken from the initial settlement
and when sufficient information to support your claim is received,
the insurance company will make the deductible payment to you.
• It is extremely common for additional damages to be found
while the vehicle is being repaired. In these cases, your repair
shop should just contact the appraiser who will reinspect the vehicle
or discuss it with the shop and when appropriate make a supplemental
payment.
